Cardinal: What has happened, Monsieur peace officer?

Chief of Gendarmes: Something terrible, Your Eminence! The Marquis Camembert is dead!

Cardinal: What do you mean, dead?

Chief of Gendarmes: Dead as dead can be! He was found a half hour ago, lying on the floor of his study! The death must have occurred as the marquis was about to leave for the wedding ceremony. (39)
