Ангиогенез требует тщательной координации сигналов роста для клеток многих разных типов. Опухоль в груди, например, не может просто создавать новые клетки рака груди вдалеке от существующих кровеносных сосудов. Опухоль должна каким-то образом заставить существующие кровеносные сосуды отрастить новые ответвления примерно как при присоединении новых домов к системе канализации. Для этого нужно вырастить новые клетки гладких мышц, соединительную ткань и эндотелий (внутреннюю поверхность сосудов); чтобы опухоль росла, ей необходимо выполнить эту невероятно сложную задачу.
