Папская индульгенция 1515 г. мало способствовала уменьшению этих опасений. Провозглашенная буллой Льва X «Sacrosanctis» продажа индульгенций была крайне честолюбивой по масштабу. Доходы от их продажи шли на поддержание строительства огромного собора Святого Петра в Риме и на удовлетворение епископальных и территориальных претензий Альбрехта Бранденбургского, недавно произведенного Гогенцоллерном в архиепископы Майнцские. Альбрехт поручил проведение кампании доминиканскому монаху Иоганну Тецелю, который энергично взялся за продажу индульгенций с обещанием, что покупатель обеспечит своей «божественной и бессмертной душе» Царствие Небесное[54]
