Do not waver. You are confident, aggressive. By punishing him, she called, you have punished me. Eternally. I fell, yes, but you allowed me to return. I am once again like you. An angel. That means my soul is as pure as yours. Therefore I ask youwhat have I done to earn such a punishment?
At last, a murmur arose.
Hope bloomed once again.
What do you mean? one of the males asked her.
Allowing you to return here was not meant to be a punishment, but a privilege.
I love Aeron. I cannot be happy without him.
You can, one of the females said. You just need time to
No! No time. I deserve to be as joyful as I have made thousands of others, and I have told you what that will entail.
This time, there were no murmurs. Only silence. Heavy silence. Defeating silence. Still she didnt bow her head or apologize for her impudence. She wouldnt back down. Not about this. If they would not give Aeron back to her, she would die with him.
He would not die alone.
Confident. If you leave things as they are, a good man slain, you will be no better than the ones you protect the humans against. They would be like the demons. She left that unsaid, but her meaning was clear.
Good men are slain all the time, Olivia. That is the price of free will. Another of the females, her tone softer now, bearing a hint of compassion.
Aggressive. We punished Aeron for his choices. Why cant we reward him, as well? For that is what truly sets us apart. Our compassion, our kindness. Our love. Love he himself has demonstrated to a humbling extent. He gave up his life for mine. Does that sacrifice not outweigh his crime? Has he not proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that hes worthy of redemption?
Murmurs again. And then, finally, a sigh.
Perhaps something can be arranged.
THE DAYS PASSED in quick succession, one fading into another. Aeron spent all of his time with Baden. They talked, laughed, cried and caught up, all the while dissecting possible locations for Pandoras box. His determination to find that box was stronger than ever. Not to stop the Huntersthough that would be a wonderful bonusbut for Olivia.
He found that he didnt need to sleep, and he didnt need to eat. He merely existed in the endless white, his resolve unwavering.
So far, theyd developed a few good theories. The box was hidden in plain sight. Perhaps stored in a realm like this one, no one able to flash inside. Perhaps buried at the bottom of the sea. Who had taken it, though, and why, they still hadnt figured out.
I want to go back so badly, Baden said as they walked through the mist. They did their best thinking this way. Every so often, at random times, were given glimpses of life down there, but theyre never enough.
What have you seen?
A few of Sabins battles with Hunters before he moved to Budapest. Your fortress. The explosion that brought you all back together. Each of the women whove helped you. Lucien is a lucky bastard. His woman is my favorite.
Youd probably offer him condolences if you actually met Anya.
Baden laughed. A troublemaker, is she? But then, arent they all. As his amusement faded, he slapped Aeron on the back. I think I miss a womans softness most of all.
Thinking of Hadiee? Why did you do it? Finally Aeron asked what hed wondered for centuries. Why did you allow the Hunters to take your head?
His friend shrugged. I was tired, so tired of constantly looking over my shoulder, suspicious about anything and everything. Id even begun to doubt you.
Me?
All of you, really. Baden sighed. I hated it. I hated that I expected each of you to turn on me when I knew in my heart that it would never happen.
Youre right. We never would have hurt you. Theyd loved this man too fiercely. Despite his demon, Baden had been the one each man relied on. The one each man sought for guidance and support.
And then the woman came, his friend continued. I suspected she was Bait, but what made it worse was that I hoped she was. So I did it. I escorted her home, let her seduce me, even though I knew the Hunters would show up. I wasrelieved when they finally approached. I didnt even fight them.
Like he had ultimately refused to fight Lysander. Are you happy with the way things ended?
To be honest, I dont know. Pandora is all I have for amusement and as you saw, she isnt very amusing.
There was no denying that. Speaking of Pandora, she seems to have disappeared. Ive caught no glimpse of her since I first arrived.
Thats the way she works. She gives you a few days of peace, lulling you with a false sense of security, and then strikes. But enough of her. Why did you do it? Baden asked, flicking him a glance. Why did you allow yourself to be killed? And yes, I know you allowed yourself to die. Youre too good a soldier to have been taken any other way.
Aeron sighed, the weary sound a mimic of Badens. All these years Ive feared death, but there at the end, youre right. I, too, welcomed it. Not because I was tired but because I wanted to save my woman.
Ah, a woman. The downfall of us all. Tell me about her. I have yet to be given a glimpse. Baden rubbed his hands together, ripe with anticipation. I want to know what kind of creature captivated so leery a man.
Yes, Aeron, I want to hear this, too.
Aeron stilled. Did you hear that? He spun, gaze searching wildly for the woman he craved more than life. He found no sign of her.
I heard, Baden said, frowning now. A female voice, right?
He wasnt insane, then. Olivia? he shouted. He would have sworn his heart began pounding in his chest. Olivia!
Several yards away, the air began to shimmer, dappled glitter in a canvas of pearl, and a shape took form. Dark curls. Bright blue eyes. Flawless skin. Heart-shaped lips. Circles of rose painted her cheeks, and glorious white wings were stretched behind her.
Wings. Angel. Shed gone home.
Can you see me? Desperate, he kicked into motion. Can you see the dead?
Oh, yes. I can see you.
When he reached her, his arms banded around her and lifted her up. He held on to her as hed never held on to another, spinning her. Here, she was here. With him. Never would he let her go.
Her head fell back and she laughed with carefree abandon. That laughterhow it soothed his soul.
Olivia. Desperate to taste her, he meshed their lips together. She opened willingly, eagerly, and he fed her kiss after kiss, savoring everything about her. The warmth of her body, the sweetness of her curves. His. And his alone.
Aeron. Theres so much I have to tell you.
Trembling, he set her down and cupped her face, never losing contact. Sweetheart, what are you doing here? How are you here? And I see youre an angel once again. My angel.
Yes. A joy-bringer, no longer a warrior.
You were always my joy-bringer, but how I dont understand.
She beamed up at him and traced her fingers all over his face, as if she, too, couldnt bear to let go. My Deity is the creator of life, and He has offered you a new one. Just as the Heavenly High Council offered me my old job backeven though they say Im now better suited for the warrior class. From now on, I will be your personal joy-bringer. They realized you couldnt be happy without me, and I would have no joy without you.
He still couldnt wrap his head around the details. Why would they care? They were the ones who wanted me dead in the first place.
You sacrificed everything. For me. My Deity acknowledged your sacrifice and sought to reward you. He will return you to your body, heal that body, and you may return to the fortress. We can be together.
Together. He wanted to fall to his knees in thanks. He wanted to shout and to dance. He could only marvel. Olivia was his.
Her gaze became questioning, unsure. Are you happy about this?
Im happier than Ive ever been, sweetheart. You are all I want, all I need.
Another smile bloomed. I feel the same. That smile dimmed somewhat. Wrathyour demon cannot be returned to you, Im afraid. I tried. But hes been given to another already.
Who?
A woman named Sienna Blackstone. Once a mortal, killed by gunshot. But Cronus saved her soul and has kept her with him.
Pariss Sienna. Of all the outcomes What did that mean for poor Paris? He could have his female back, after all, it seemed, but she would be crazed by Wrath for many years to come. She would exist only to exact vengeance upon those who sinned.
Aeron would do everything he could to ease her transition. And hopefully, the demon would recognize him. They still had a job to do, after all. Stefanos punishment. The demons who hurt her, too.
Will I be mortal? he asked. Not that he cared. He would be with Olivia. What did an aging body matter?
No. Youll be immortal, just as before. In fact, your body will be restored to what it was at its creation. You will be without your tattoos, without your butterflies. Without your wings. Again she appeared unsure. Is that okay?
Okay? That is magnificent. Laughing now, he spun her a second time. Could life get any better? Maybe not. She didnt look as happy as she should have. Whats wrong? he asked as he stilled.
Legion. Shes back in hell, bound once more to its flames because her bond to you was destroyed.
Ice crystallized in his veinsright along with realization. Thats what Lysander had meant by the words she will return home. He should have known, suspected at the very least.
Lucifer is so angry with her, hes left her in her human body and the demons are tormenting her ceaselessly. Galens looking for her, and I thinkI think hell even venture into hell for her. He wants to kill her because apparently she tried to kill him.
Aerons eyes widened. Legion had tried to kill Galen? So much had happened since his passing. I cant leave her there, he said. Despite everything that had happened, he still loved the little demon.
I know. Which is why Ive spoken to the Council about my new duties. As your joy-bringer, I explained that you need the demon in your life or that life will not be complete. They have agreed that if you decide to go get her, they will let her stay with you, because what she is enduring now is a hell that will last her a thousand lifetimes. Upon her rescue, though, she will be assigned a guardian angel to ensure she harms no humans.
Yes, yes, I accept for her. Legion hated angels, but she could deal. Shed have to get used to his Olivia, anyway. Yes, he said again. He didnt even have to think about it. You, Olivia, are even more amazing than I realized. You did this, and I can never thank you enough. He rained little kisses all over her face. You have given me everything.
Just as you have given me everything.
I will spend the rest of my days ensuring you have your fun.
All I need is your love.
Aeron dove in for another deep, penetrating kiss, and soon they were lost in it, their hands all over each other, eager, ready for more, determined
Uh, guys. Badens voice pushed through the illusion of privacy and both of them turned toward him. He waved at Olivia. Hi. I hate to break this up, because wow, but what about me? I want in on this action. I want to go back to my body.
Im sorry, she said. You have made no sacrifice. Im afraid you have to remain here.
Regret and sorrow instantly tainted Aerons newfound peace. Hed only just found Baden, and now he was supposed to abandon him?
Badens shoulders sagged. Is there anything
No, Olivia interjected softly. Im sorry. You are already dead. Theres no sacrifice you can make.
Ill find a way to get you out, Aeron vowed. Pandora mentioned the box. Ill never stop searching for it, I swear on my life.
His friend nodded, but there was sadness in his voice as he said, I will miss you.
And I you. Tears now burned his eyes.
Baden smiled, though even that was sad. Tell Torin he owes me a sword. Tell Sabin I havent forgotten how he cheated at chess. And tell Gideon I want a rematch. Hell know what you mean. He rattled off a message for every warrior, and damn if they didnt break Aerons heart. By the end, his tears were flowing freely. Until we meet again, Aeron.
We will. Meet again.
I will never lose hope. Without another word, Baden walked backward, step by agonizing step. So badly Aeron wanted to shout for him to stop, but just as he opened his mouth to do so, unable to take the grief, the warrior disappeared in the mist.
Im sorry, Olivia said, petting his chest.
Aeron jerked her back into his arms, grip tightening. This is not the end. I swear it. He buried his face in the hollow of her neck. He could never repay her for all that shed done for him. I love you. So much.
I love you, too.
Im going to make you happy. Of all the things Ive sworn, that is the most important to me.
She pushed to her tiptoes and kissed him. You already have made me happy. Now lets go home. There are lots of people eager to see you.
First, and I cant believe Im saying this, but fly us to my bedroom. We need a proper reuniting. Then well meet with the others.
That earned him another laugh. Thats right. I have wings now and you do not. Guess that means Im in charge of our moreillicit activities, too. So you can consider it done. Seeing to your happiness is my job, after all.
For which I will be eternally grateful.
They kissed again before heading home.
